Bruce is a Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist who learned to shoot on the family grazing property in Queensland. He commenced target shooting upon joining the Army in 1974 and first Captained the Army Target Rifle Team in 1980. Bruce has represented the Army and North Queensland State Teams on many occasions and has over 30 Queen’s badges.
Bruce has competed in Bisley and Canada and was a member of the 2003 Palma Team. In 2005 he was an anchorman for the victorious Australian Team in the Australia Match in Brisbane. In 2006 he successfully represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games claiming a Gold in the Individual and Silver in the Pairs full bore shooting matches.
Bruce is extremely dedicated to his sport and devotes much of his time to junior coaching and administration at all levels. In 1998 Bruce successfully coached the Australian Under 21 Team in the Trans Tasman Match in New Zealand and in 2004 repeated the performance with the Under 25 Team. He is Chairman of the North Queensland Rifle Association and a member of the ICFRA TR Committee.
Bruce is an Army Officer and Consultant living in Townsville, with his wife Sue and their two emerging junior shooters, Caitlin 19 and Alexander 18. Bruce launched into semi-retirement for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and enjoyed it so much he plans to continue this lifestyle beyond 2007.
