Since 1979, Gil has represented his country eight times in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada, including three Palma and five Australia matches. He has represented his home state of Tasmania over thirty times in National Teams Matches since 1966. He holds the record for the highest score in the Merrett Match (200.24) and was the first person to finish three days of the National Teams Matches without dropping a point. Individually he has a world championship stage win and approximately 30 Queen’s badges to his credit. During his memorable career Gil has also represented Australia at Match Rifle.
Between shoots Gil is Chairman of the Tamanian Rifle Association. One of the younger shooters in the team, and recently described by an erudite Queenslander as “an itinerant shepherd from Van Diemen’s Land”, Gil is a woolgrower from the central north of the island of Tasmania.
At home, Gil dabbles in rifle stock making and wood turning, as well as masquerading as the local fire brigade chief. Much of the rest of the time is spent attempting (mostly unsuccessfully) to please his management committee of wife Dawn and four daughters.
